Urumie White Cement Co. registered in Urmia, under the name of “Asquarabad Industrial and Mineral Co.” in 1977, for the purpose of establishing White Cement Factory in 25th Km of Salmas road, and then changed its name to “Urumie White Cement Co.”
The executive operations of the factory stopped due to outset of glorious Islamic Revolution in 1979, and also because of the imposed war in 1980, and its continuation until 1988 At the beginning of 1991, following to preliminary stages and purchasing the equipment (By participation of “Bank Melli Iran”) its establishment stages re-started, and it was inaugurated officially in the year 2000 during the trip of Mr. S. M. Khatami, president of the time.
During the first years of its misuse, some obstacles were encountered by the managers due to problems such as chaotic market situation, the product not being recognized by domestic and foreign clients, as well as the problems available at the beginning of production, which by high efforts of all the managers, hard-working personnel and the support made by sympathetic authorities, all the problems were improved, and now it has attained such an economic status, which we witness efflorescence and luminosity of the name and product of the factory throughout country, and even international.
Nominal production capacity of Urumie White Cement factory is 14400 tons of clinker and 15000 tons of white cement per month, which the full capacity realized in the past years, and will continue the full production in the current year, as planned.
The main materials used in the production of white cement include lime stone, kaolin, feldspar and gypsum. In spite of a lime stone mine a kilometer away from the factory, its misuse has not been possible due to transportation problems, therefore, the limestone, like feldspar, kaolin, and gypsum, are provided from other mines.
Privileges of the factory and its product
The modern production technology, enjoying suitable man- power and easy access to the production data are considered as potencies of the production process. Considering the equipment repairing and maintenance all repairing and manufacturing affairs of main parts, are performed by the experienced and old-hand personnel, even replacement of the kiln in single fuel system (Mazut) with a double fuel one (Mazut and Gas) carried out by the factory experts, enabling the production with an output of over 110%.
1. Execution of Research and Development projects for the product.
2. Increase of the cement quality: Increase of pressure strength in 28 days from 500 kg/cm2 to 680 kg/cm2 and increase of average whiteness from 87% to 91%
3. Elaborate execution of PM and CM programs
4. Designing and execution of fire alarming and extinguishing systems, environment protection, and safety measures of the personnel.
5. Improvement of cooling-tower plan for enhancing the electro-filters output, and preventing environmental pollution
These among the other measures have caused the white cement produced by the Co. to gain an international fame, being granted the following awards:
– International Star Award for Quality in 2006, from Switzerland
– International Arch of Europe, in 2007 from Germany
These awards are decided annually by BID Co. in Spain, based on customer satisfaction, accurate decision and planning, financial results, human resources, ISO 9000, modern management and etc., and a voting is taken to elect superior companies for presentation of the award in all fields.
Export of the product
The produced white cement is mainly sold in domestic markets, and also in the neighboring countries, especially in Iraq, and partly in Middle-Asia (Azerbaijan and Armenia), and Arabic countries of the Persian Gulf area.
Considering the rate of product export in the recent years, Urumie White Cement Co. has been introduced as example exporter of the province.
The ever-increasing trend of the white cement production, and its distribution in Iran and abroad claim for a middle-term planning to not only realize the export goals, and gain foreign currency, but to try not to fall behind the producers to hold the regional markets, in the intense competition, because considering the hurrying changes and achievements of Iranian industries worldwide at one hand and the necessity of capabilities and being competitive against other countries at the other, multiplied endeavor must take place, e.g. export of the products needs new requirements, such as decreasing production costs, improved energy consumption, and decreasing environmental damages, so as to make our final – price competitive. Furthermore, promotion of the product quality must be continuous to deliver the goods on time, and to gain a suitable position in the world markets, and here role of the government for creation of special facilities for the exporters, and their encouragement should not be ignored.
Available problems and obstacles
One of the problems of distribution and export of the product is the transportation of the goods to Iraq, and Persian Gulf neighboring countries, which the Iran Trade Development Organization should remove the fundamental problem by subsidizing the transportation in export section, to protect non-oil export
At the present time, quality of Urumie White Cement Co. is upgraded so much that in some cases it reaches over three times as much for white cement defined standards, and the very privilege has caused orders for the white cement by the European countries
Outlook of the Company
The Urumie White Cement Co. with the motto of “Quality production, environment protection and personnel health”, and realization of this motto, has converted itself into a well-known unit in cement industry of the country, and considering the premium quality, over 50% of the produced cement is exported abroad, packed in 1 and 1/5 ton jumbo bags, also in bags with 25kg and 50 kg on or without pallets.
Moreover, the Co. holds certificate of IMS, based on Quality Management System (ISO 9001:2000), Environmental Management System (ISO 14001:2004) and, Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHSAS 18001:1999), by TÜV-Nord Co. of Germany, also received Quality International Awards, based on the standards and principles of TQM-QC 100, by BID Co. and the Committee, and now management of the Co. laying emphasis on systematic approach, considers production of a quality product, preservation of environment, human health, and continuous improvement, as duties of all processes of the Integrated Management System.
Passing stages of the success by Urumie White Cement Co., is the result of efforts and ambition of all the regional, provincial and state sympathetic authorities, as well as the respectful shareholders on one hand, and executive managers, and hard-working personnel on the other the personnel and workers are considered as main capitals, who by their utmost effort, and perseverance, being main and strong elements of Urumie White Cement Co., gaining practical experience, and passing general and specialized training courses, have caused the Co. to achieve the current place.
Over 210 persons are working in Urumie White Cement Co. at the present time, which may increase up to 350 persons in the case of development projects execution taking the training of managers and personnel into consideration, and believing in the principle that training costs for promotion of the personnel’s specialty are a part of capital costs, portray a clear outlook for the Co. Regarding environmental issues, the Co. has focused remarkable force on them, and since beginning of 2005 while making main changes in mechanism of the Co., marked measures, such as improving the cooling-tower and changing the electro-filters, have been taken. Moreover, in the very direction, the green space expanded for 25% of the factory total area, e.g. over 4/5 hectares.
All the activities in connection with environment are performed as per standard “ISO 14001:2000”, which is considered to be a big pace to change the process of cement production industry into a green industry.
Provision of welfare possibilities including the supplementary medical treatment insurance services, renting sport halls and swimming pools, traffic services, serving warm food at lunch and dinner, taking care of the personnel’s health, establishing loan, safety and etc. committees are among the management programs which all realized, and we will witness multiplied activity of the housing cooperative, in near future.
Considering the above premises, in the case the obstacles are removed, and preliminary stages are passed, we will witness execution of development plans of Urumie White Cement Co., whether in the increase of production, or variety of the products (color cement and etc.)
In the world of today where information is determining in all fields, especially in economy, and appealing to open management system, and exchanging information with other countries, is a necessity of a dynamic and successful economy, the Urumie White Cement Co. following the changes made in its management, and its approach to modern system, has taken positive steps in the field information technology, advertisement, consideration of customers demands, and pace to pace movement with the world up to date technology, so as not to fall behind the progressing caravan of industry of our dear Iran, and to fulfill his duty in economic and industrial efflorescence of the area and country.
The Urumie White Cement Co., the only producer of white cement in the west of the country, with a nominal production of 500tons per day, supplier of a part of domestic demand, and neighboring countries as well, is busy working with a main objective of “Quality production, preserving environment and personnel’s health”. It is obvious that increasing satisfaction of all interested parties of the Co., including customers, suppliers, stockholders, contractors and etc. are the most important indicators in attaining the said goals. Thus, the Co., establishing IMS, based on the standards of Quality Management system (ISO 900:2000), Environmental Management System (ISO 14001:2004), Occupational health and safety system (OHSAS 18001:1999) and continual improvement, and its effectiveness, presents its policy as per following principles:
1. Increasing customer’s satisfaction by production of clinker, white cement, presenting superior quality based on the national standards
2. Regular and continual planning and action for the prevention and decreasing of pollution and environmental consequences, improved use of energy resources (fuel, power, water), decreasing of damages and increasing of green space.
3. Constant planning, action and supervision to increase the personnel’s safety level, and all who visit the factory, decrease detrimental elements of working area, decrease accidents statistics and preventing the diseases resulting from the work.
4. Promotion of the human resources competence, as the most valuable capitals of the Co., through continual and planned training, for the purpose of increasing their skills.
5. Improved use of the equipment and machineries, regular planning of the productive infrastructures repair and maintenance
The management of the Co. assumes himself undertaken, while reconsidering the policy annually, to do his utmost effort to achieve the said goals, and to realize them with cooperation of all colleagues. Therefore all the personnel of the Co. are bound to understand the policy, and execute it in all organizational levels.
